Butter Chicken {Recipe}

It is almost a little strange for me to be writing a post about Indian food as it is a food that I am not particually fond of. I usually find the dishes a bit too spicy or then don't make my tummy feel too good after, if you know what I mean haha! Anyways, while my sister was home, she begged and begged me to go to an Indian restaurant downtown so I decided I would give it another try. I am glad I did because this became my favorite comfort food. 

I ordered the butter chicken. It was moist, creamy and just absolutely delicious. My mom is pretty good friends with the owner and snagged a recipe for us to make at home! I bless you with this deliciousness:

What You Will Need 

  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp peanut oil
  • 6 cloves minced garlic
  • 1 large white onion diced
  • 6 chicken cutlets
  • 3 tsp garam masala
  • 3 cups canned chopped tomatoes
  • ½ cup plain, unsweetened yogurt
  • 1 tsp ground cardamom
  • 1 tsp freshly ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 2 tbsp chili powder
  • 2 tbsp lemon juice
  • 4 tbsp finely grated fresh ginger
  • 1 clove minced garlic
  • 2 tbsp honey 
  • ½ cup cream
What You Will Do 
  1. In a large pot, over medium heat, saute the onions and garlic in the butter and oil until softened. Increase the heat to medium high and add the boneless chicken thigh pieces.
  2. Cook completely through but do not overcook. Remove chicken from pan and set aside.
  3. Add the tomatoes. Saute the tomatoes until they break down and form a chunky sauce.
  4. Add the sauteed tomatoes to a large blender or food processor along with the chiles, yogurt, 4 tsp garam masala, cardamom, nutmeg, cumin, chili powder, lemon juice, fresh ginger, minced garlic, and melted butter.Puree all ingredients together and simmer together until reduced by about ¼. 
  5. Add the chicken back to the pot and simmer slowly for 10 -15 minutes.
  6. Finish the dish by adding the honey and cream.

Serve over rice or with a side of veggies! The leftovers from this are super yummy as well!

  3. Pretty awesome that you could get the recipe from the owner! Man those are a lot of ingredients, but it definitely looks amazing! One of my fav dishes as well. I used to be like you too...didn't care for Indian, but when you try the right dish, suddenly there are all of these amazing spice combos that taste so nice! Wow. I sound like a fat kid....um...anyyywayyyy...looks great!
