So, I Am Done With College..Now What?

You know how most movies depict high school being so amazing? Or how you will hear people say "high school was the best time of my life"? well, that was so far from my experience it wasn't even funny.

In high school, I had two close girlfriends and they were like my sisters. It was honestly like us against the world though. We were bullied constantly for just the most ignorant and dumb things. Due to this, I could not have gotten out of there fast enough.

I was accepted into The Ohio State University and started taking classes for what I thought was my calling, Hospitality and Tourism Management. I really enjoyed the classes I was taking and I even managed to get an internship at a nationally recognized hotel brand. Life was good and I thought I had it all figured out.

Once I had finished my Bachelors in Hospitality and Tourism Management, I decided to move back home to Florida for a few family issues. I transferred to a hotel down here but quickly realized this wasn't what I wanted to do with the rest of my life.

On a whim at 2am one morning, I decided to start applying for teaching jobs. Knowing that I had no prior experience, just a feeling in my heart that this was what I should be doing, I wasn't exactly hopeful.

Low and behold three days later I had five interviews lined up. I accepted a position as a lead teacher for the two year old room at a preschool. I have to give a huge shoutout to my director there because she definitely took me under her wing and encouraged me each step of the way. Shortly after accepting this position, I also re-enrolled myself in school for the Early Childhood Education program.

At the young age of only 23, I have been a lead teacher for three different ages at two different schools, been an assistant director and now I am advancing my passion for working with children and am back in school yet again for Special Needs.

I took a very long path to get to where I am now and it definitely was not always easy. Thankfully I have a kick ass support team behind me at all times. There were countless nights that I would call my mom at midnight crying that I was a failure and she always encouraged me to get back up and keep going.

I know that I am lucky and have an awesome team behind me but I also know that some people don't. We are still in the generation of children that may be the first in their family to go to college or that just don't know where to go from high school. That doesn't have to be the case anymore. College is a new and exciting experience but the weight of trying to find a job after all the money you just spent on four years earning a fancy piece of paper that says to have completed a certain program is scary! I was lucky that I managed to gain jobs that I stuck with during my schooling. The majority of my friends were not as lucky as I was and were SOL after their four college years.
