The Makeup Capsule Experiment: Month One

As we all know, being a blogger comes with some awesome perks. One of the best in my opinion is free stuff. I have never really categorized myself as a beauty blogger but more as a lifestyle blogger with an interest in beauty. I phrase it this way as I personally would never do tutorial type posts- I love reading/watching them but I just can't seem to do them right. I also don't want to write solely about make up but, I do have a serious love for all products.

If you ask John, he would tell you I have way too many products for my own good. Although I may or may not agree, that doesn't stop me from a bi weekly trip to Ulta. I was on Pinterest the other day searching make up storage ideas and a post kept surfacing from Maskara (she is a fabulous resource for all of you true beauty bloggers out there) about a Makeup Capsule. After seeing the thumbnail about five times, I finally clicked it

After being interested in the capsule idea, I googled "make up capsule" and found out that it is actually a thing. I read and read and read on different ways to do it and I am kind of taking bits and pieces of each one to create my own set of rules.

To start, I have cut my make up collection in half. I went through all the freebies I was given and the products I have gathered lately and picked out my favs. The things I didn't want or couldn't use, I gave to friends or donated to our local women's shelter.

How it works:
From January 2016-June 2016, I am planning to not buy any new lip, face, or eye products. I am stressing new because I will repurchase items that are essential to me such as primers, foundation, concealer, setting spray and finishing powder.

At the beginning of every month, I will put together a group of make up products that I will use for that whole month. The goal at the end of this is to hit pan on the majority of my collection/get my moneys worth before going out and buying new items. I am only doing this for six months because I do wear a fill face of make up 6 out of 7 days a week. I have gone over my collection and the majority of what I have now should only last until June.

My Game Plan For Each Month
-face primer(s)
-liquid foundation
-one shadow palette or up to five single shadows
-eye liner
-two mascaras
-2 lip colors and applicable liners
-translucent/finishing powder
-setting spray

-bareSkin Pure Brightening Serum Foundation in Bare Espresso (my holy grail as of late)
-Colourpop Highlight in Lunch Money
-Urban Decay Naked Flush (blush and bronzer) in Naked
-Maybelline ColorBlur in Plum,Please
-NYX Liquid Suade in Soft Spoken

What do you think of makeup capsules?

  1. Interesting idea! I pretty much do this now, and then breakout of my normal products for a special occasion or a fun weekend. I seriously need to sort through my makeup and get rid of stuff, like you mentioned I have so many freebies and old products lying around!

  2. I feel like I do this without even meaning to! I have always stuck to the same makeup and really never strayed from it...unless I am completely out and they don't have what I need in stock. I hate when my makeup bag gets too full I can't close it so I am always throwing things out!

  3. what a fun experiment! I definitely need to try something like this - sounds like a cool way to learn new makeup things :D

stop by and chat with me ♥

  4. Oh LORD I want to do this but know I won't keep it up! Our house is overflowing with my makeup! Can't wait to see how you do!

  5. I don't have enough makeup to do this lol. Looks like a fun idea though.

  6. What a cool idea! Like Hil D I don't have enough make-up to do this, but looking forward to watching your journey and updates.

  7. Sounds like a great idea. Now I'll have to buy makeup to try this out!

  8. Great idea! Good luck with it!

  9. What a great idea, Sarah! I think the whole capsule idea would definitely help you weed through the things you wont use and determine your true staples. I noticed bareminerals bareskin is your holy grail. It's mine as well. I love that thing and use is almost everyday!
Thanks so much for sharing this on #SHINEbloghop. It's so great for you to join us this week!

  10. Thank you for sharing at the Thursday Favorite Things blog hop

  11. I do this without even meaning to aha. Once you find a good set of products, it's hard to use anything else. :P
This is such a great idea, and a great way to save money.

  12. I've heard about this before but never knew what it was about. So thakn you for sharing! I have so many beauty products but I do seem to stick to the same one's for my everyday makeup but for special occassions, I will pull out everything. I may have to try this!

  13. you are brave! There is no way I could commit to this, but I will definitely be watching to see how you do!! Good Luck

  14. So, somehow growing up I never learning to really do my makeup. I mean I can throw on some foundation and eye shadow (one shade only) and mascara, but not LEGIT like I see so many women rocking. Your snap the other day of your getting ready process was truly mind blowing. I wish I could learn to do my makeup better, but oh well. Alas, I think this is a fantastic idea to get your money's worth, and I'm excited to see what you think in June.
