Week 23: What Blogging Has Taught Me

Welcome Back to Week 23 of the 52 Week Blogger Challenge.

This week is all about what blogging has taught me.

I have been thinking about this for a few weeks actually and there are a bunch of smaller lessons blogging has taught me but, I think the most important one for me has been that I need to blog for me.

I went into this blog adventure first with a teaching blog. I started with 1 follower/subscriber and ended with 550. I talked about my classroom and lesson plans, life as a teacher, and my experiences. I loved it. However, once I stopped teaching, I stopped blogging. After a few months, I felt like something was missing so I started this lifestyle blog. At first I did it just for me and I was loving it. I wasn't really focused on the promotion of my blog or trying to get followers, I just wrote what I wanted.

Then, I was bit by the follower bug. I started seeing blogging as a competition and wanted to get more followers, brands to work with me, and notice. I started sponsoring other blogs, promoting my blog through various outlets, and pushing out 5 posts per week. I am not saying I don't love blogging but I started to feel the burn out.

I have now come to realize, that I want this to remain a fun passion of mine and I want to be followed and noticed by people who truly love my content. Not the ones that have to like it to reciprocate a Facebook group thread. Obviously blogging for monetary success is great, it isn't always fun. I want to stay true to myself and my content and become a success story through that.

Why do you blog? What is something you have learned from blogging?

  1. Love this post. We really have learned at the Dollhouse that if we blog authentically and be us - the right people will stumble on our blog and social media outlets. Thank You for sharing your reason of why!

  2. It's interesting how addicting blogging can become and then how competitive!! I blog because I love the write and words have to come out!! I'm not big but I love being able to share.

  3. I love this! I think it's so important to blog because you want to, not because you want to make money. Most of the time if you blog authentically, the money will come, anyway!

  4. I'm so glad you started your lifestyle blog because I never would've found you otherwise! I had no idea you were a teacher! That's what I went to school for but I lost my passion in that field and didn't finish my degree. Our blogging journeys even started out similar! We're too much alike!

  5. This is great! It's so hard to fall into the trap of blogging to gain followers. I blog because I love it, but I do often feel like well, if I had more followers... But I work hard to stay true to myself and it's working so far!

  6. I have learned very similar lessons. It got to be so much trying to be the "perfect" blogger that it ruined any enjoyment I had in it to the point I didn't even want to post. I had to learn to take a step back and remember why I blog.

  8. Ahhh I love these types of posts. Blogging has taught me A LOT AND I really wish I had figure out sooner how to monetize and make this more professional. Now that I'm in the swing of things, I just wish I'd be going it for longer. Best decision I ever made! xx Adaleta Avdic

  9. Hi Emily! I couldn't agree more. I have been blogging for about a year and a half and I'm currently on my third blog break. When I feel pressured to blog on a schedule, it is super stressful and I didn't create my blog to be stressed. It was supposed to be my creative outlet/stress reliever. The minute I realized that it was starting to feel like a second job, I had to take a break and reevaluate a lot of things. Now I decided that I am simply going to blog when I feel inspired to write about something and hopefully my loyal readers will still in whether it's been a week, two weeks, etc.
